Try the Following Easy Steps First

Before we jump into the more tedious checks and solutions, we recommend going through the below options if your Apple Pay is saying ‘pending’. There could be a couple of simple issues that you need to tick off!

Do You Need to Verify Your Identity?

When using Apple Card or Apple Cash, you may be asked to verify your identity in order to protect your account. For Apple Card, you will need to scan a photo ID such as a driving licence, and for Apple Cash, you will need to follow the below steps:

  1. Open the Wallet App, select Apple Cash card, select ‘more’, and select ‘Card Details’
  2. Select ‘Verify Identity’ (if this isn’t here, you have already done it and can confirm so if you scroll past the terms and conditions to see ‘Account Verified’)
  3. Follow any and all instructions on the screen to verify your identity (you will need a driving licence or other photo ID, your full name, and other information to do this).

Do You Meet the Requirements?

Next, you need to make sure that you meet the requirements set out in your country to use the app. For example, in the UK, no one under the age of 13 will be able to use Apple Pay. However, other requirements will include being connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or another connection, and that you are signed in to iMessage and iCloud with the same Apple Account on the device that you want to send or receive money on.

Do You Need to Tap ‘Accept’?

If you turned off the setting to automatically accept Apple payments, or this is your first Apple payment, you will need to manually accept your payments. So, if you see the ‘Accept’ message pop up on your screen, be sure to tap it!

To change this setting, go to your Wallet App → Apple Cash card → More → Card details → select Manually Accept Payments or Automatically Accept Payments.

Do You Have Apple Cash Turned On?

In order to send and receive money via your iPhone, you need to have Apple Cash turned on. This can be done by going to Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay → turn on Apple Cash.

Why is My Apple Pay Saying Pending

If you have gone through the above and are still experiencing the ‘pending’ issue, it’s time to move onto the below solutions. Bear in mind, none of these are actually difficult, but they are likely to be your second course of action after verifying everything else on your end.

So, let’s get into what else you can do to solve the ‘why is my Apple Pay saying pending?’ issue.

There Could be an iOS Issue

Usually an iPhone will update without any issues, but sometimes things just don’t do right. If you are struggling to update your iPhone, you can update your iOS in Recovery Mode. To do this, you will need the latest version of iTunes on a Windows or Mac laptop/PC.

Follow these steps:

  1. Connect your Windows/Mac device to the phone
  2. Do a force restart (steps outlined in an above section) to get your phone in Recovery Mode
  3. Don’t let go of the buttons until the phone screen has the Recovery mode screen (a charging cable with an arrow pointed at a laptop)
  4. Select ‘update’ when the option to restore or update on your computer shows up
  5. Confirm, then follow the instructions given to you (it can take up to 15 minutes, so have some patience)
  6. Your phone will restart on its own once you’re done

If this doesn’t work, you can try updating your iOS in DFU Mode. This mode is more complex than Recovery Mode, and varies depending on the device model you have. Follow these steps to effectively go through the process – remember that this will wipe your phone, so back-up important data.

If this doesn’t work, you will need to get in touch with a professional like us, or Apple.

The Recipient Might not be Verified

As we mentioned previously, you have to verify yourself in order to use Apple Pay. So, if the person you are sending money to isn't verified on their phone, they will need to do so before being able to accept a payment or send any of their own.

There Might’ve Been a Glitch Somewhere

Glitches can be frustrating, but many of them are easy enough to resolve with a few clicks and swipes. The easiest way to resolve a glitch is by restarting your device to kind of jump start it into working correctly again.

Depending on the iPhone model you have, you will need to take different steps to force restart your device.

For iPhones that Support iOS 16 or Later

  1. Quickly press the volume up button and release
  2. Quickly press the volume down button and release
  3. Hold down the side button
  4. Release the side button when the Apple logo shows

For iPhones that Don’t Support iOS 16 (iPhones 6, 7, 8 and SE (1st Gen)

  • iPhone 6 models and iPhone SE (1st Gen) – Hold down the home and sleep/wake button at the same time, then release the buttons when you see the Apple logo
  • iPhone 7 – Hold down the sleep/wake button and volume down button at the same time, then release the buttons when you see the Apple logo
  • iPhone 8 and iPhone SE (2nd Gen) – Quickly press the volume up button and release, then do the same with the volume down button. Hold down the side button, and release it when you see the Apple logo
